How to Control Mind : Induction of Hypnosis
In movies or television, what we usually see is that putting a person in a hypnotic state is as easy as saying “You are feeling sleepy. You’re eyes are getting heavy.” But in reality, there are certain phases to be undergone to be able to have a successful hypnosis session.
Just like any other sciences, certain methods, processes, or procedures have to be undertaken to ensure that certain theories are proven or specific results are achieved. Same goes for hypnosis. Since hypnosis is already being considered as a science, there are also some phases or procedures that have to be considered or followed to be able to achieve the effect being aimed for.
Prior to undergoing hypnosis, it is a must that the patient is very comfortable and trusts the hypnotherapist. Also, the patient should be willing to undergo the process. In considering such, these can be a major factor in the success and flawless hypnosis section. Once all of these had been achieved, a subject should be informed of what will happen and what he/she will undergo. It is also important to assure the subject that there is nothing to fear and talk about his/her concerns (such as not being able to wake-up from the hypnotic stage). In this way, the subject will become more relaxed, comfortable and undisturbed. This phase is more of conditioning or preparing the subject, thus called the preparatory phase.
As soon as the subject shows signs that he/she is already in a hypnotic state, hypnosis proper may already be done, which is the induction proper. It is in this phase where the “You are feeling sleepy. You’re eyes are getting heavy.” scenes we see in movies or television are done. In reality though, the hypnotherapist will first ask the subject to focus first on an object prior to saying the “suggestibility” phrases such as the one mentioned above. This is the phase that the subject appears to be dazed, slumped (if the subject is sitting) and immobile, indicating that the subject is already in a hypnotic state.
Putting the subject in a hypnotic state is merely not the end of the process, especially when there is still the possibility of the subject being roused bask to consciousness. It is a must that the subject be placed in a deeper state of trance to be able to effectively achieve the purpose of the hypnosis session. In deepening the trance, the subject is being informed that the trance is getting deeper, that there will be periodic silence in the session, and where the subject will be given the ideas, or suggestions to carry out to test if the subject’s suggestibility or depth of the trance.
One these phases have been successfully carried out, the hypnotherapist can now instill in the subject’s mind whatever the purpose of the session is, be it for losing weight or removing a bad habit. One must take note, though, that the effectiveness of hypnosis not just depends on the processes or phases being undergone, but also in the subject’s willingness to cooperate and belief in the effectiveness of hypnosis.
